How to test internet speed in Terminal in Raspberry PI

In this tutorial I will show you how to test internet speed in Terminal in Raspberry Pi. There are lots of different ways to check the speed on the browser but it’s fun to check the internet speed in terminal. Let’s see how we can do that.

Prerequisites

There are few dependencies that needs to be installed before.

~ sudo apt update -y
~ sudo apt install python3 pip -y

Check Python Version

~ pi@raspberrypi:~$ python3 -V
Python 3.7.3

So now we have latest python 3.7.3 installed.

Install Speedtest Cli

We have to install speedtest cli on Raspberry PI in order to test the internet speed.

Speedtest CLI brings the trusted technology and global server network behind Speedtest to the command line. Built for software developers, system administrators and computer enthusiasts alike, Speedtest CLI is the first official Linux-native Speedtest application backed by Ookla. Link

pi@raspberrypi:~$ sudo pip install speedtest-cli
Looking in indexes: https://pypi.org/simple, https://www.piwheels.org/simple
Collecting speedtest-cli
Downloading https://files.pythonhosted.org/packages/9f/39/65259b7054368b370d3183762484fa2c779ddc41633894d895f9d1720f45/speedtest_cli-2.1.3-py2.py3-none-any.whl
Installing collected packages: speedtest-cli
Successfully installed speedtest-cli-2.1.3

So, now we have speedtest cli installed on Raspberry PI. It’s time to have fun.

Test internet speed in Terminal Raspberry PI

Let’s check the speed.

pi@raspberrypi:~$ speedtest-cli
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from O2 Deutschland (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...

So, you can see the internet speed on your terminal. There is Download speed, Upload speed and your internet provider.
